Declan Ryan, the president of Viva Air, an Irish company, complained in this communication to the government for what he considered “unfair treatment” in the USD $ 370 million loan that favored Avianca.
In addition to Avianca, four of the six airlines that operate in the domestic market submitted their requests for financial support to the Management Committee of the Emergency Mitigation Fund (Fome) in May 2020. In the offices of the Ministry of Finance there are still Support requests filed by Latam, Viva Air, Easyfly and Satena remain.
In total, the requested credits amount to USD $ 1,070 million, which are distributed as follows: Avianca: USD $ 875 million, Latam: USD $ 117M, VivaAir: USD $ 55M, EasyFly: USD $ 14M, and Satena: USD $ 9M. So far, Avianca is the only company with approval of a government approved loan amounting to 370 million dollars.
According to Declan Ryan, CEO of low-cost airline Viva Air Group, the loan to Avianca is excessive compared to the help offered to his airline, which is currently negotiating a loan of USD25 million to safeguard the operations of its 16 planes.
“The government is in breach of a prior commitment not to show special treatment to any particular airline while distributing aid,” Ryan warned.
