Unlike the usual noisy, fuel-powered cars in its class, this Cobra Jet has a fully electric drive with a quiet powertrain and zero-emission mechanics.
The Ford company this week unveiled the prototype Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, its first all-electric acceleration racing car.
It is a ‘dragster’ – a car specialized in acceleration racing – which, according to the automaker, promises to travel a quarter of a mile (about 402 meters) in eight seconds and at more than 273 kilometers per hour.
Unlike the usual cars in its category, noisy and fuel, this Cobra Jet has a all-electric drive with a quiet powertrain and zero emission mechanics. It is equipped with a battery capable of producing 1,400 horsepower and a torque of 1,491 Nm that allows it to achieve a great sprint in the most demanding race environments.
According to Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance, the electrical innovations of the motor of this prototype offer a “completely new type of performance”. “It is an example of how to take the new technology to the absolute limit,” he says.
The design of this Mustang pays homage to the original Cobra Jet that dominated ‘dragster’ tracks in the late 1960s. Ford has provided no further details on the engine, battery or other technical aspects. However, he plans his world debut later this year along with a demonstration of what “exactly he is capable of on the road.”
With this model, the American company demonstrates its tendency to electrify its range of vehicles. Last November, it unveiled its first electric: the Mustang Mach-E, a powerful and spacious sports utility vehicle inspired by its iconic 1964 Mustang. A few days earlier that same month, it revealed the Mustang Lithium prototype, looking quite similar to the Mustang. GT, but it was not commercialized.
