The earthquake occurred at 18:09 local time on Saturday (9.09 GMT), with its epicenter in the sea off the coast of Miyagi and about 60 kilometers deep, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

This body also warned of the risk of a one meter high tsunami occurring in the same northeastern Japanese prefecture.

The Japanese television NHK reported a rise in the sea of approximately that height registered a few minutes after the earthquake in Miyagi, while the authorities warned that successive tidal waves of greater height could occur.

The earthquake in Miyagi reached the top 5 level on the Japanese scale, out of a maximum of 7 and more focused on the affected areas than on the intensity of the earthquake.

In other regions of northeastern Japan, the earthquake was level 5 on that scale, while in the Tokyo metropolitan area, where the earthquake was felt strongly, it was level 3.

In Fukushima prefecture, where the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located, level 5 was also reached, and at the moment the plant operator is analyzing whether the earthquake caused any damage, according to NHK.

The situation is also being assessed at the Fukushima Daiini plant, which has been inoperative since the nuclear disaster caused by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, as well as other nuclear power plants in the affected regions.

The Japanese Executive has summoned an emergency team to collect the available information, according to the aforementioned state media.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in an area close to the one that originated the 9.1 magnitude earthquake on the Ritcher scale of March 11, 2011, which caused a tsunami that devastated northeast Japan and triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident .

On February 14, another earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Ritcher scale occurred off the coast of Fukushima, which according to the JMA experts could be a replica of the one in 2011 and could be followed by other similar tremors.
