Josua Hutagalung, a coffin maker on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, never imagined that his life would change in “the blink of an eye.” A soccer ball-sized meteor struck the roof of his house.
“I was working on a coffin, near the street in front of my house, when I heard a noise that made my home shake. It was as if a tree had fallen on us “, Josua Hutagalung told The Sun.
Beyond the scare, the shocking fact for the 33-year-old was the price they paid for the space rock: $ 1.8 million. This is a little more than 6,500 million pesos, which turned the humble worker into a millionaire “overnight”.
Jared Collins, an expert on space rocks, was sent by the buyer to secure the meteorite.
“My phone lit up with crazy offers for me to get on a plane and buy the meteor. It was in the middle of the COVID crisis and, frankly, it was a difficult decision, between buying the rock for me or working with scientists and collectors in the United States, ”stated Collins.
The meteorite was sold to an American collector who has it stored in liquid nitrogen at the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University.
According to experts, the 2.2 kilogram rock is 4.5 billion years old and is considered one of the most important finds in history.
It was classified as CM1 / 2 Carbonaceous Chondrite and is an extremely rare variety, scientists say.
What did Josua Hutagalung do with all the money he received? The father of three showed his kindest side and vowed to use some of the money to build a church for his community.
