Before the arrival of the first 50,000 vaccines against covid-19 to the country, in Medellín they announced a change in the strategy to apply the 4,599 doses that correspond to the capital of Antioquia.

At first, all the doses were to be applied to 2,299 people, in two phases, taking into account that the Pfizer drug, which was the one that arrived, requires two doses 28 days apart.

However, Mayor Daniel Quintero assured that these 4,599 doses will be applied to the same number of people, since when the 28 days have passed since the first injection, more doses would have arrived to complete the immunization in those almost 4,600 people.

“With these doses we are going to vaccinate a total of 33 percent of the people we need to vaccinate from the health system, therefore, those that are going to arrive next week, which will be many more, will allow us to advance to reach 100 percent”Said the mayor.

In this first stage, the health personnel around the Intensive Care Units (ICU) in the city hospitals are prioritized.

“This is very important because it means that ICU beds will no longer be closed, because when, for example, an intensivist became infected, It meant dropping 30 or 40 beds from the system due to lack of staff. But it is also justice, because this sector is the one that has put its chest to the coronavirus ”, Quintero added.

Regarding this first batch, he indicated that an analysis had already been made on where the vaccines should arrive, in addition to having the freezers, security and the entire logistics process ready.

(In addition: There are only four municipalities left in the country free of covid-19)

The Secretary of Health, Andree Uribe Montoya, reported that the laboratory freezer for storage of samples, reagents and others “has the capacity to house approximately 40,000 doses, with temperatures down to -80 ° C. It has a security system, refrigeration, user-friendly design and has a temperature control system that guarantees that biologicals remain in good condition “.

While Medellín will have 4,599 doses, 1,971 doses of the drug that arrived in the country yesterday for the beginning of the vaccination process were destined for the other municipalities of Antioquia.
