After the Government issued Decree 1779 of 2020, this December 24, which determines the increase in the salary of congressmen in Colombia by 5.12%, that is, that from 2021 they will go from earning $ 32’741,000 to $ 34 ‘ 417,000 pesos, Former President Álvaro Uribe assured that the congressmen of the Democratic Center, the party of which he is the leader, will not receive this increase.

Through a trill, the ex-president said: “Congressmen from the Democratic Center will not receive the increase in remuneration, they analyze whether they reject it or assign it to a social task.”
Thus, the president assures that none of the 51 legislators of the Government party, among which are Paloma Valencia, María Fernanda Cabal,
Edward Rodríguez, Juan David Vélez, among others, will not receive that increase.

Hours earlier, the former head of state said he hoped to move forward with the referendum, which contemplates, in one of its 13 points, the “decrease in the number of congressmen and freezing of wages.”
“Hopefully we can move forward with the referendum,” he trilled.

In August, the Democratic Center asked the Head of State not to sign the decree that determined the increase, but, according to sources from the Casa de Nariño, President Iván Duque was obliged to sign the decree that increases the salary of legislators .
The same source clarified that the salary readjustment of the congressmen is a constitutional provision.

“The allocation of the members of Congress will be readjusted each year in proportion equal to the weighted average of the changes that occurred in the remuneration of the servants of the central administration, according to the certification issued by the Comptroller General of the Republic”, indicates the Article 187 of the Constitution.
This December 24 also issued the decree that adjusts the salary of the administrative staff of Congress of the Republic of the different degrees of the salary table.
