Faced with the imminent extradition of Rodrigo Tovar Pupo, alias ‘Jorge 40’, a letter dated September 1 was known in which he assures that “It is time to assume the responsibilities derived from my direct participation in the Colombian armed conflict. That possibility has eluded me because the Colombian State has never given me the minimum security guarantees to be able to do so.“This after what happened to his brother, who was murdered in the country 11 years ago.
Likewise, addresses the victims, the President, the JEP and the members of the Comprehensive System of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-Repetition.
He tells the victims that he is going to tell the truth, although it is difficult, he recognizes that it is “necessary to understand what happened to us, avoid its repetition and in this way give Colombia a certain possibility of embarking on a path towards reconciliation“.
For his part, the former paramilitary asks President Iván Duque to provide him with security guarantees, because he fears that what happened with his brother, Sergio Tovar Pupo, on December 24, 2009 will be repeated. Furthermore, he emphasizes his commitment to contribute to the Peace processes that are taking place in the country.
In that same sense, he emphasizes his “commitment to the victims of Colombia is full. It is the least we can do for our sons and daughters to give them an opportunity to live in a different country than the one in which we lived“. For this reason, he asks the Special Jurisdiction for Peace to do not reject the application for admission: “To reject my application is to reject a fundamental part of that truth (…), that is a truth that I need to tell in order to rejoin society, but above all, a truth that Colombia needs to attempt a process of reconciliation and to be able to overcome spiral of violence in which it is submerged “.
