The commander of the National Navy, Admiral Gabriel Pérez Garcés, referred to a video that circulates on social networks in which some soldiers are seen that, apparently, they appropriate donations for the inhabitants of the island of Providencia, affected by the passage of hurricane Iota.
The official assured that the military institution is always attentive to solving complaints from the community in the midst of its policy of “zero tolerance” with acts of corruption.
In the video, signed by a Providencia resident, a group of uniformed men is seen in front of some boxes and bags from which they extract some elements.
A woman, who is the one recording the video, narrates: “Yesterday I came and asked if they had men’s clothing. They told me no, and that there were no more shoes. (The soldiers) are taking out to deliver supposedly to the community, but they are distributed first among themselves“is heard in the video.
“The other one puts a pair of pants in his pocket … the other one takes a pair of shoes,” continues describing the woman.

Admiral Pérez told EL TIEMPO that the three uniformed men involved, those who were filmed, have already been fully identified and removed from their position.
“A disciplinary investigation was opened against them, which will continue according to those in charge of it. Today (this Thursday) they will be transferred from Providencia to San Andrés, and from there to their units of origin, “said the officer.
The commander of the Navy added that he had to acknowledge that there was a disciplinary offense, “which is evident and clear,” which, he assured, is analyzed and will have consequences.
“The investigations were opened (…), and from there they will continue their process. We have to guarantee their due process. They know the guidelines and guidelines, which are very clear about the delivery in humanitarian missions and in relation to the delivery of aid “, highlighted Admiral Pérez.

Similarly, he pointed out that it seeks to identify if there are more people involved, and most importantly: “How is the delivery of the aid being fulfilled?“, he specified.
The officer regretted that this situation has been registered, since, in his opinion, there are more positive things and the work carried out by the Public Force in favor of humanitarian work in service of the community.
“We have more tokens of gratitude than complaints, and that is what is gratifying. This is an isolated case that bothers us a lot, but that motivates us to continue working. This is a disaster area, here there is not even a shadow,” said the admiral from San Andrés, where he moved his office several weeks ago to attend to the emergency.
And he concluded: “They tell us: ‘I have not received humanitarian aid’, so we locate the house, help them and accompany them. It is almost door-to-door handling, that’s why a situation like this gives us so much pain“.
