“It constitutes a danger to society”, as was described by the Chilean Prosecutor Diego Alexander Ruíz Restrepo, the 33-year-old Colombian citizen who was arrested last Monday, November 9 in Chile, for the alleged murder of eight people on the streets in the Meiggs neighborhood, in the center of Santiago de Chile.

Taking advantage of the nocturnal darkness and the condition of vulnerability and social fragility in which most of the victims found themselves -who lived and slept on public roads, that is, in a street situation- he proceeded to beat them with his feet and then stab them directly and certainly in vital areas of the body, for which he used a knife-type knife”Explained the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Pamela Contreras.

As reported by the Chilean authorities, the first crime committed by Ruíz, nicknamed the Meiggs murderer, was the first of November of this year, at 6:15 in the morning, where, for no apparent reason, he murdered Carlos Rivas, a Colombian who, like him, was in Chile irregularly.

Minutes later, the authorities indicated that Ruíz murdered a 64-year-old person. From that moment on, he continued his crimes in the area; five corpses belonging to older adults in vulnerable conditions.

Although at the time the investigation speaks of eight confirmed murders, seven classified as consummated homicides, and one as an attempted murder, the prosecutor in the case argued at the hearing that, taking into account the way in which Ruíz acted, the number of his victims could get to 15.

There is a link that there are at least 15 cases that, depending on the location and the weapon used, could be linked to this case”Said the representative of the Public Ministry, adding that the six-month period set for the development of the investigation would increase.

We believe that an investigation of this importance, with this number of victims, a reasonable and prudent period is 12 months, said the prosecutor Pamela Contreras.

According to the Chilean Prosecutor’s Office, the capture of Diego Alexander Ruíz could be carried out thanks to the search of the surveillance cameras of one of the streets of the city, which captured him at the time he committed one of the crimes, which allowed the authorities to establish his route, and find his residence, thus, the Group of Special Operations (GOPE) of Chile managed to capture him.

He did not interact with the victims, many of them were even sleeping when he, without provocation, stabbed them“Contreras explained, adding that the psychopathy of the alleged serial killer had” quite special “traits, because he went from robbing to murder in a way that shows a disconnect from his personality.

With the evidence gathered so far, the images from the security cameras, the testimony of witnesses, the bladed weapons and the clothing that the authorities found at his residence, among others, the Prosecutor’s Office requested that precautionary measures be taken, as that Ruíz presents a danger to society. The subject was sent to the Special High Security Unit of Santiago.
