Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo on Wednesday condemned and rejected the acts of alleged excess of police force that ended with the death of the 46-year-old lawyer Javier Ordóñez in the city of Bogotá.

“The Ministry of Defense rejects and condemns any act by a member of the Police that violates the law or ignores internal regulations,” said Holmes Trujillo.

The head of the Defense portfolio stated that the two agents involved in the incident are already undergoing disciplinary and criminal investigation. He argued that the institution will give “all the collaboration” required by the competent authority.

Finally, he expressed his solidarity with the victim’s relatives, as well as his willingness and that of the institution to accompany them throughout this process.

“I express to the family all the solidarity and pain caused by the death of Mr. Javier Ordóñez and the will to accompany that they require,” said the defense minister.

Colonel Necton Lincon Borja Miranda, Citizen Security Operational Commander of the Bogotá Metropolitan Police, also sent a message of “solidarity” to Javier Ordóñez’s family.

“From the Police we regret the loss of this life and we sympathize with the family of this citizen, whom we are accompanying with an inter-institutional group,” said the officer.

He indicated that the agents were immediately removed from their positions. “From the Metropolitan Police of Bogotá we have decided that these two uniformed men who were involved in these events be immediately removed from their positions and the corresponding disciplinary investigation will be carried out.”

Faced with the preliminary investigation opened by the Prosecutor’s Office, Borja affirmed that “the CTI will assume the investigation, for which we have expressed to the accusing entity our willingness to provide all the elements that are required and thus clarify the facts.”
