President Iván Duque issued Decree 1779 of 2020 on December 24, which determines the increase in salary of congressmen in Colombia by 5.12%.

This means that Starting next year, the monthly allowance for the members of the Congress of the Republic will go from $ 32,741,000 to $ 34,417,000 pesos., an increase of $ 1,676,000 pesos.
In addition to their salary, congressmen receive Christmas and holiday bonuses, which are calculated on the base salary.
Other costs that Congress assumes are the materials and maintenance of its offices, as well as the payment of its legislative work units (UTL), which includes up to 10 employees who must total a maximum of 50 million pesos paid by salary, according to the rank to which they can apply.

According to the norm that governs the salary of congressmen, the annual increase is made after a certification issued by the Comptroller’s Office in which the increase in senior State officials is averaged.
This year there was a controversy in the country due to the refusal of the congressmen to stop collecting 14 of the more than 32 million pesos that they accrue monthly, despite the crisis generated by the pandemic.
A few days ago, the senator from the List of Decency, Gustavo Bolivar, again mentioned what he called an “infamy” the high salary of the Congressmen of the Republic that they earn even when they have a three-month recess.
Several bills have been presented in Congress to reduce the salary of Congressmen but none of them have been approved.

Administrative employees salary increases
The Presidency also issued a decree in which it adjusts the salary of the administrative employees of the Congress of the Republic of the different degrees of the salary table.
The basic monthly allowance scale for employees of the Senate of the Republic and the House of Representatives was as follows:

On the general secretaries of the Senate and the House, who are high officials of Congress, they will have a salary of $ 17,989,089. To this basic salary of the general secretaries of the Congress of the Republic is added “the monthly management premium” which is equivalent to $ 2,107,862.
The administrative general directors of the Senate and the House of Representatives will also have a salary of $ 17,989,089. In addition, they have a management premium corresponding to $ 1,725,445.
For their part, the general undersecretaries and the secretaries of the Constitutional and Permanent Legal Commissions of both corporations will earn the equivalent of $ 14,098,560 as a basic monthly allowance. To that amount is added the monthly management premium, which will be equivalent to $ 1,729,294.
