Through social networks, a new case of a person over 80 years old was injected with an empty syringe in the middle of the National Vaccination Plan against covid-19.

This time it happened in Villavicencio and again the event was recorded on video. The images show how Emiliano Parrado, an 83-year-old adult, is initially injected with an empty syringe.

According to relatives denounced, after a granddaughter evidenced the fact, they proceeded to apply a syringe already with content. The events were presented at the Mi IPS Corporation, which is part of the Medimás network.

Over the weekend a similar case was known at the IPS of Sura in La América, in the western center of Medellín. There, Mrs. María Emma Uribe, 94, was also punctured with an empty syringe and after the notice of the relatives, they correctly applied the vaccine.

Last week it happened in Floridablanca, with a woman who initially received an empty injection at the Foscal Clinic and was subsequently administered the dose.

And while the epidemiologist Silvana Zapata insists that these types of episodes can be caused by inadvertent errors, that pass in traditional vaccination programs, affirms that the Expanded Program of Immunizations (EPI) must be more demanding and follow the protocol in front of the user of preparation for applications. Or in other words, all vaccination procedures must be transparent to people. “Only in this way will it be possible to gain trust with citizens and achieve the implementation of the plan in a transparent manner,” he says.

The clinic version

The Mi IPS Corporation issued a press release in which it gave its version of what happened. In the first place, they point out that the investigations were initiated to clarify the facts and contribute to the investigations and that, as part of a transparent protocol with the users and their companions, recording of the
immunization procedure.

“The health worker who vaccinated Mr. Emiliano Parrado explained the procedure to the companion, knowing that it was being recorded as part of the protocols. In said recording, she exposed the empty syringe and the biological separately and, immediately afterwards, performed the puncture with the empty syringe, without realizing that the vaccine had not been packaged“, they indicate.

“It is the worker who notices the mistake made and tells the user and his family that he had not carried out the procedure properly. After explaining the incident, he requests authorization to carry out a new puncture, with the biological package. The companion of the user, as was expressed in the care provided, accepts the apologies expressed by the vaccinator and authorizes that the protocol be carried out again, this time administering the vaccine of
correct way “, they say.

The statement ends by saying that the institution providing health services offers excuses to the user and his family for the altercation, the product of human error, and expresses its commitment to provide all the evidence collected, in case any authority requests them.

“Supersalud once the information is obtained from the required entities, will evaluate whether it finds merit to carry out inspection, surveillance and control actions, additional to those carried out by the Sectional Secretariat of Antioquia ”, he reported.

In the same way, the Superhealth made a request to the departmental health secretaries of Santander, Javier Alonso Villamizar, and the municipal of Floridablanca, Olga Lucía Caballero, to inform as soon as possible the actions deployed to clarify the case and determine whether or not there was non-compliance with the guidelines provided in the scheme of the National Vaccination Plan.

In this way, The officials must present the supports that demonstrate the results of the actions carried out within the framework of their competences and the status of the investigations carried out, taking into account that the territorial entities are the ones who must carry out inspection, surveillance and control tasks over the actors in their jurisdiction.

It is worth saying that according to the most recent official report, in Colombia 843,204 doses have been applied against covid-19 and only these three isolated facts of vaccination problems have been known.

The National Superintendency of Health provided on line 01 8000 513 700, option 7, exclusively to address the concerns of users related to the National Vaccination Plan.
