They assassinate a former FARC combatant who was in the process of reincorporation: they killed him in Miranda

denounced this Sunday the murder of another former combatant of the extinct FARC guerrilla in the municipality of Miranda
, in the department of Cauca
. The victim was identified as Manuel Alonso Villegas.

“They assassinated Manuel Alonso, 55, known in the old FARC-EP as ‘Romel’ or ‘Carmelo’. He was found dead in the municipality of Miranda, Cauca,” the FARC reported on its social networks.

According to the information shared by the political party, which emerged after the peace agreement signed between the Government and the FARC in November 2016, with the assassination of Alonso there have already been 248 homicides against former combatants since the disarmament of the guerrillas.

“With it the unfortunate number of 248 quenched dreams of peace is completed. The enemies of peace do not rest. Our condolences,” added the FARC.

The Institute of Studies for Development and Peace, Indepaz, assured that “Manuel Alonso Villegas was in the process of reincorporation” and was part of the Territorial Space for Training and Reincorporation (ETCR) of Monte Redondo, located precisely in Miranda.

“His murder occurred around noon and his body was abandoned in the urban area of ​​the municipality,” the entity noted.

Regarding these crimes, the Colombian Government assured on November 25 that it has acted “with diligence” to protect the former FARC guerrillas who laid down their arms in a hearing in which the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) heard from senior officials and the party on the violence against the signatories.

In that judicial proceeding, the FARC insisted that there is a “genocide” against its militants and accused the government of President Iván Duque of having a double discourse for peace and not stopping “the bleeding” that affects them.

For her part, the Deputy Attorney General, Martha Yaneth Mancera, pointed out that the Prosecutor’s Office at the court of November 11 had in its records 280 reincorporated people with affectation, either due to homicides, attempted homicides or forced disappearance.

On that occasion, the director of the JEP’s Investigation and Accusation Unit (UIA), Giovanni Álvarez, warned that “if the trend continues, in December 2024 1,600 former FARC combatants will have been killed.”

Last July, the JEP ordered several state institutions, including the Office of the Prosecutor and the Presidential Council for Stabilization and Consolidation, to take protective measures for former FARC members.

At the end of October, ex-combatants from all regions of the country began a pilgrimage to Bogotá “For peace and for life”, in rejection of the murders of their comrades.
