The rains do not stop in Cartagena. In the last hours, the Advisory Office for Disaster Risk Management of Cartagena (OAGRD), raised a new call to the community to be prepared for the incidents of a climate phenomenon that is advancing in the Caribbean.

According to IDEAM, a tropical wave makes its way towards Colombian waters and in the next 48 hours it could become a cyclonic phenomenon.

The atmospheric system has been approaching the country at a speed between 13 – 17 knots (24 – 31 km / h), with rainy conditions and a possibility close to 30% of becoming a tropical cyclone. The forecast indicates that during the following days there will be abundant cloudiness over the country with a high possibility of rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds, especially in sectors of the Caribbean, Orinoquia, Andean and northern Pacific regions.

Fernando Abello Rubiano, director of the OAGRD, pointed out that as a result of the last rains in the city, a series of emergencies have occurred that are preventable, if the community abides by the recommendations. “We have found, for example, that they secure roofs with stones, old furniture and logs, practices that are of course not recommended and tend to generate more risk than they prevent,” he said.

The OAGRD invited, initially, to secure well these roofs, either zinc or fiber cement, with the appropriate ties in internal structures under the roof. Also, check that there are no cracks between the tiles and the walls, since the force of the wind can lift them if you cannot find a way to continue on your way.

Another important recommendation is to keep the community’s roof drainage areas and storm gutters clean.

“We also request that you review the electrical installations at home, it is important to use the ideal cables for the energy network of our home, and always have a family emergency plan at hand, which guides the members of the household on what to do. in case of an emergency, ”said Abello.

Rain emergencies

Due to the rains in the last hours, the OAGRD has attended emergencies in various sectors of the city. Difficulties were reported due to winds, rains and falling trees in El Pozón, Olaya Herrera, Las Palmeras, José Antonio Galán, Las Brisas, Villa Estrella, Barrio España, Nueva Granada and Bayunca, the latter being the most affected.
