They arrested Councilor Agustín Rodríguez Silva, allegedly involved in the murder of the mayor of Sutatausa, Cundinamarca

Is about Agustin Rodriguez Silva, acting councilor and former mayoral candidate for said municipality, who in the afternoon of November 25 was captured by the Sijin while participating in the plenary sessions of said corporation.

The authorities syndicate it of alleged participation in the homicide of the elected mayor of Sutatausa, José Humberto Rodríguez, who was murdered in December 2019.

The case

Jose Humberto Rodriguez was assassinated on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, by a gunshot to the head, moments before entering his residence.

The elected president had been meeting with the police authorities to learn in detail the security situation of the municipality, which he would take office as mayor on January 1.

Rodríguez was struck down and, despite being taken by his relatives to the nearest hospital, little could be done to save his life.

At the time of his death, he did not have any security or protection scheme.

The case caught the attention of President Iván Duque who sent a message of solidarity on Twitter to the family of the deceased and demanded coordination of the Defense, Police and Prosecutor’s Office, for the prompt resolution of the case.

The president said that: “We condemn the vile murder of José Rodríguez, the elected mayor of Sutatausa. I have instructed the Ministry of Defense and the Colombian Police to advance quickly with the Prosecutor’s Office in investigations that allow the capture of criminals “hours after the murder.

Later, the governor of Cundinamarca together with the Police established a reward of 50 million pesos for whoever gave information that led to the capture of Rodríguez’s murderers.

At first, the motives were not easy to clarify by the Prosecutor’s Office, who attributed the crime to the actions of criminal structures prevailing in the region.

The capture

The union Agustín Rodríguez Silva had participated in the electoral fair without reaching enough votes to win the mayoralty.

His name appeared in the judicial investigation after criminal responsibilities were attributed to three members of the criminal gang ‘The puppies’, who is present in the region and who were, until the capture of Rodriguez, the main suspects of the mayor-elect crime.

According to information issued by the Government of Cundinamarca, it was the SIJIN that proceeded to arrest after waiting for the accused outside the premises of the compound.
