Mateo Posada, one of the tourists who were in Providencia, reported details of the impact and damages suffered the providence after the passage of Iota.

Posada, who managed to reach San Andrés safely, said that he took refuge in a bunker in the hotel where he had stayed. “All Providencia is destroyed, all houses and vegetation are destroyed. Colombians have to unite so that they feel that they are part of a family because they have lost everything, “he said.

“It was impressive. Fortunately the hotel where I was staying had a bunker designed for this and once the report of the state of the hurricane was known we got in there and we were locked up for two nights. We thought the best way to continue was to get out and move towards the airport, ”said Posada, who had arrived on the island with 12 other people.

“We were diving, we come from Medellín and we are fine“, said.

Adrián Villamizar, pastor of the Baptist Church of Providencia and who was also evacuated by an Air Force plane, related in the same way the odyssey lived after the powerful hurricane Iota.

We were not prepared for this. The passage of the hurricane had two impressive cycles, the first at 2:00 in the morning where we thought we had overcome it; then at 4:00 am where we thought it was the worst but from 4:00 to 6:00 am We got to a point where we thought we weren’t going to make it. The island was destroyed, and all the houses were erased. Everything is destroyed ”, he said.

After the first flights to the island of Providencia, the first 27 tourists arrived in San Andrés that they were rescued safe and sound in Colombian Air Force aircraft.

The Air Force Commander indicated that they will advance several rescue and tracking trips to Providencia in the company of the Navy and the National Disaster Risk Management Unit.

The Colombian Air Force, through the Military Transport Air Command (CATAM), had its aircraft Hercules C-130 and Casa C-295 to carry out the rapid and timely transport of humanitarian aid to be delivered to the population that inhabits the islands.
