The terrible figures of violence so far this year

It is on January 19, 2021 and the figures for violent homicides, massacres and human rights violations begin to pile up in Excel sheets.

With the massacre perpetrated in Popayán, Cauca, there are already four people in these 19 days. In total, there are already 12 people murdered in these events who have raised a cry of pain in Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and Caquetá.

The phenomenon did not go away with the December holidays, nor with the resurgence of coronavirus infections in the country. The pandemic of violence seems to show the same face of 2020 and this is warned by human rights organizations.

Indepaz, which registered the fatal movement of violent death in 2020, the figures for these first three weeks are frightening, since they note that there has not been a clear response against the victimizing events.

“This 2021 has started in a tragic way. We have one murder per day of social leaders and people in the process of reincorporation; two massacres per week. Some cases like that of the councilor of Algeria (Cauca) where the body has not yet appeared; They also indicate that a great Palenquero leader in Córdoba was murdered in an atrocious manner and this only indicates that the violence continues to rampage, ”indicates Camilo Gómez, director of Indepaz.

A leader or reintegrated person is killed daily

Indepaz registers that so far in 2021 11 social leaders and human rights defenders have been assassinated and four reincorporated from the defunct FARC.

The situation continues as in 2020, when a total of 310 social leaders, activists and defenders of human rights and 64 ex-combatants in the process of reincorporation were assassinated.

“There is not enough rethinking. Urgent measures are required, for the National Commission for Security Guarantees to function and formulate the policy, it is necessary to address the humanitarian social emergency that is occurring, in a real way and not with formulas that have already been repeated, ”says Gómez.
