The infections and deaths from COVID-19 show an accelerating rate that has the authorities in suspense by the speed with which the pandemic could take over the emergency services and intensive care units.
This Tuesday, the Ministry of Health registered 12,526 new cases and 251 deaths. This is a worrying indicator, since a week is completed with a daily report of more than 10,000 positives, which has not been seen since August, which in the registry is the worst month since the start of the health emergency.
The country accumulates 1,530,593 infections and 40,931 deaths, at a time when in almost all regions the authorities decreed new preventive measures during the end of the year celebrations to avoid a collapse of hospital networks.
The cities and departments with the greatest acceleration of the pandemic are Bogotá, Antioquia, Atlántico, Valle, Cartagena, Risaralda, Santander and Norte de Santander, among others.
Bogotá accumulates 28.3% of the cases reported across the country. In the capital in total, 430,198 cases have been registered.
“Bogotá has 359.2 active cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants and a mortality rate in men of 147.5 per 100,000 and in women 74.8 per 100,000. When comparing Bogotá with Miami, New York, Madrid and the main cities of Latin America, the capital of Colombia occupies the fifth place according to the number of cases per million inhabitants (55,395 cases) ”, reported the Ministry of Health.
For this reason, the Mayor of Bogotá decreed exceptional measures for the end of the year festivities such as the prohibition of the sale and consumption of alcohol in public spaces, as well as the celebration of parties in public areas.
Every health measure we have taken in Bogotá seeks a balance between health care and the economy.

Concern is high in Atlantic, which with 824 cases displaced Valle del Cauca (801) from third place in terms of infections. In Barranquilla, the city councilors asked Mayor Jaime Pumarejo to decree the peak and ID to contain the pandemic. In the city, prohibition and curfew were enacted during the holidays.
In Bolívar, which registered 782 new cases this Tuesday, the highest concern is for Cartagena, where there are 732 patients. In the rest of the department there are 41. Turbaco (6) and Villanueva (7) also concern the authorities.
Restricting social and family gatherings to a maximum of 10 people, prohibiting events and parties in public spaces, halls of closed complexes and shopping centers, are some of the measures that were decreed in the heroic city to regulate the celebration of Christmas and the end of year in the city.
The sanitary guard is still high in Antioquia, where 1,944 cases were presented this Tuesday. Valle del Cauca, where strict measures such as the curfew apply, presented 801 infections.
Santander with 518 cases, Cundinamarca with 495, Risaralda with 323 and Norte de Santander with 314 also show high numbers.
