The news was confirmed by the Bucaramanga councilor, Francisco ‘Pacho’ González, who reported that “during the last Metropolitan Board, together with the doctor and also a member of the Board, Elkin Chaparro, we proposed the inclusion of the municipalities of Tona and Lebrija within of the Metropolitan Area ”.

The lobbyist expressed that the reasons for this proposal have to do with the fact that “today the issue of connection, of the services provided between municipalities, the importance of the territory extends far beyond the current municipalities that are part of the area. ”.

González Gamboa explained that, in the case of Lebrija, the Palonegro International Airport is located in its territory, which serves the four main municipalities and the road between Bucaramanga, Barrancabermeja and the connection with Medellín passes through there.

Also, the councilor ‘Pacho’ González highlighted that “the Bucaramanga reservoir is supplied 100% from the Tona river, which is part of the municipality of the same name. Likewise, this municipality shares ecosystem territory with Floridablanca, Piedecuesta and Bucaramanga and also owns hundreds of hectares of the Páramo de Santurbán, in the district of Berlin ”.

After the proposal, last Saturday, the mayor Juan Carlos Cárdenas, in the company of the director of the Metropolitan Area, Álvaro Pinto and the councilman Francisco González, visited the district of Berlin, the Piedra Parada ecotourism project, the El Tembladal village, at 3,000 500 meters high, and made a tour of a dairy farmer cooperative and later the urban area of Tona.

Councilor ‘Pacho González’ said that “in conversations I have had with the mayor of Bucaramanga, he has told me that he wants to make a social investment in the Santurbán issue. If Tona belongs to the Metropolitan Area, national and international resources and the entity could be channeled to this municipality to contribute to social responsibility with the region ”.

Through his Twitter account, Cárdenas, stated that “we are going to continue touring Santurbán in its different points so that we can really understand the dimension of its defense and work on joint responsibility projects from the Metropolitan Aqueduct and the Metropolitan Area of Bucaramanga for its population”.

This writing learned that the investments for the two municipalities could be made through resources from the Metropolitan Aqueduct ”.
