What at first was described as a novel and informative format in relation to the measures taken by the Government to address the health, economic and social crisis due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus in the country, today, eight months later, has become on the grounds of criticism. It is the “Prevention and Action” program that President Iván Duque presents every day and whose audience or rating is Pyrrhic.
Yesterday, exactly when the eight months of its broadcast were completed, Rating Colombia determined that the program went from 17 points (on March 24) to just five. What’s more, until the publication of this note, YouTube had only counted 120 visits to the video posted after its completion.
Likewise, the portal “La Silla Vacía” found that that broadcast on March 24 had 2.4 million viewers only on Caracol and RCN TV. In total, 3.4 million people were connected to the program from different media. But the decrease in its audience, according to the same medium, began to be evident since May.

And what was born as an informative and pedagogical space, has now become one in which the president uses it to publicize other issues on the Executive’s agenda, such as, for example, the aid that the Government is taking to San Andrés after the passage of Hurricane Iota, among other issues that are a bit different from the dynamics of the Health Emergency due to COVID-19.
For this program, the opposition has requested the right to reply to confront what has been said, however, they have not been granted it because the media that replicate said information are free to transmit the program.
Guardianships have also been filed to suspend the broadcast, however, these have also been denied. Like the requests that citizens and congressmen have also made to stop the format as it is considered obsolete and that it deviates from its purpose.
Due to the criticism, the head of state has already manifested himself, assuring that the daily space from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and that it is transmitted by all the Presidential networks and channels, is not about “presidential vanity” . Duque has highlighted the participation of epidemiologists, infectologists, doctors, mayors, governors, members of international organizations and even presidents of other states.

Analysts have said a lot about the program. There are those who highlight the intelligence of broadcasting before the 7:00 pm newscast, which ensures a down payment, as Omar Rincón said. Others, like Miguel Jaramillo, assure that for many people the program has become a landscape, because the coronavirus has gone from being the main concern of Colombians, as recent polls have shown.
