In response to the ex-guerrilla’s letter, in which he asked for support for the implementation of the Peace Agreement, the former president said that those who want to tear it to shreds “will be left with the frizzy facts”, due to the legal provisions of the agreement.
Former President Juan Manuel Santos responded with a letter that Rodrigo Londoño, president of the FARC Party, sent him to ask for support for the Final Agreement, whose implementation is slow, regarding the attempts of Uribe to modify and erase the agreement. In his letter, the former president insists that this is not possible.
First, he greeted the Pilgrimage for Life and for Peace, the long walk of former combatants from the regions to Bogotá, to ask for their safety and for the serious implementation of the Agreement. Regarding that, Santos recalled the commitments made by the Government, after President Iván Duque sat down with the caravan.
“I understand that the Government promised to: accelerate the land delivery process, accelerate productive projects, additional security measures and seven meetings of the National Reincorporation Council in the territories to assess the situation of each one of them. Security is especially important, ”he said, adding that it is necessary to advocate for compliance with the Havana texts, both on the part of the State and on the part of today’s Party.
Regarding Londoño’s concerns regarding the intentions to destroy the agreed peace, Santos was emphatic: “I would not worry so much because neither the agreements nor the JEP (Special Jurisdiction for Peace) are repealed,” he said, even if there are attempts to referendums. “It is a categorical legal and political impossible. As I said to Pope Francis at the end of his historic visit: the peace dove must be let fly alone because fortunately it was armored, “he said.
Indeed, the obligation not to touch the Final Agreement is a constitutional provision that must be respected by this and the next two governments. “No decree, law, constitutional reform, not even a referendum, can reverse it”, because, he recalled, their strength is anchored in international law, International Humanitarian Law, international criminal law and human rights. He also recognized Londoño that the path of peace has not been, nor is it, easy. That there has been friendly fire on both sides: by the ex-combatant through the dissidents who returned to arms, and by Santos himself on behalf of a political sector that is “populist, a liar and plagued with hypocrisy.” However, he pointed out that these people will be left with “the frizzy facts”: “as you said at the end of your letter, peace is the most valuable asset of any nation.”
