The effects of the health crisis have translated into a 16.8% drop in smartphone deliveries in the first three months of the year.
Global shipments of ‘smartphones’ have fallen 16.8% in the first quarter of 2020 due to covid-19, the IEEE Communications Society reported Thursday, citing data from the company specialized in technology Omdia.
This company blames the decline that suppliers had difficulties managing the production shutdown, especially in China, while there were delays in the launch of new products, partly due to the cancellation of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (Spain) due to the health emergency. They also point to the cause of this collapse the low demand of consumers.
During the first three months of 2020, 274.4 million mobile phones, compared to 329.9 million registered in the same period in 2019. The fall has affected all the main brands in the sector, including Samsung, Huawei and Apple.
“Great difficulties”
“The ‘smartphone’ market will face major difficulties in the first half of 2020 as different countries experience the initial shock and recovery periods at different times,” says Jusy Hong, director of smartphone research and analysis at Omdia. This company forecasts that world shipments of this product will decrease by up to 1.2 million units, that is, 13% less than the previous year.
He also indicated that manufacturers view the second quarter sales results with more fear. However, Hong explained that from his company they expect the market to begin to experience a Recovery in some countries and regions in second half of this year.
