The renowned firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds published its Latin America University Rankings 2021, an annual publication that lists the 410 best universities in the region. On this occasion, two Colombian institutions remain in the upper part 10, while a total of 60 managed to appear on the list.
On this occasion, the highest part of the list did not present major variations compared to previous years, without any new participant within the first ten places made up of three Brazilian institutions, two from Mexico, Chile and Colombia, and one from Argentina. Of these, seven maintain their positions.

The table measures eight key indicators of university performance: academic reputation, employability of graduates, web presence, ratio of professors to student, staff with doctorates, international research network, scientific publications and research produced, and citations per article.
Once again, the best-scored institution was the Catholic University of Chile, which in addition to being at the top of classification, also presents a perfect overall score.

These are the best universities in Latin America:
1. Catholic University of Chile (Chile)
2. University of São Paulo (Brazil)
3. Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico)
4. University of Chile (Chile)
5. State University of Campinas (Brazil)
6. University of the Andes (Colombia)
7. National Autonomous University of Mexico (Unam) (Mexico)
8. University of Buenos Aires (Argentina)
9. Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
10. National University of Colombia (Colombia)
Thus, the Andes and the Nacional repeat place within the upper part 10. The first dropped two places compared to the previous list, when it ranked fourth, while the second remains stable in tenth position.
Ben Sowter, Research Director at QS, comments: “This year’s edition of our independent audit of Latin American universities indicates that, as our exercise matures and our dataset continues to develop, we now see a stable hierarchy: there are no new participants in the top twenty this year. Within these top twenty, stability is the main characteristic of the table, with PUC Chile being the only institution in this band that has registered a significant increase. “

Sowter continues: “Although Brazil remains the regional powerhouse of higher education from a research and representation perspective, its local dominance is much less pronounced at the individual indicator level than might be expected. Only one of its universities is among the Top 30 in the region for graduate employability, and its impact on research does not match raw research productivity. Chile and Colombia achieve more high scores for our employability indicator, while also struggling to achieve scores maximums for our measure of teaching capacity “.
How did Colombia do?
For this edition, Colombia’s participation was much more significant than in previous years, positioning 60 institutions among the 410 best in the region, making it the third country with the highest number of universities on the list, only behind Brazil. (94) and Mexico (66). Argentina (42), Chile (40) and Peru (20) follow.

7. University of the Valley (50)
8. Eafit University (57)

Other notable cases are those of Valle, which improved eight places, and Rosario and the Universidad del Norte, which each improved seven places. In contrast, there were other institutions that descended the ladder, such as the Andes and the Javeriana (each one two positions).

The Universidad del Rosario was among the first to react to the publication. John Leonardo Vargas, coordinator of Competitive Intelligence of the Directorate of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness of the Alma mater noted: “This is a sign that the labor and academic market recognizes a seal of quality and trust in Rosario. In this edition, the university ranked number 26 in Latin America in reputation with employers, this being one of the most relevant indicators of classification”.
