The ‘Álvaro Uribe Way’ is approved in Miami-Dade

Miami-Dade County commissioners in Florida approved the resolution that names as ‘Álvaro Uribe Way‘to the segment of the 117 avenue that goes between streets 24 and 42 of the southwest.

The measure was approved with nine votes in favor and only two against. Eileen Higgins and Xavier L. Suárez, commissioners from Districts 5 and 7, respectively, were the only ones to they opposed the resolution due to the judicial process against former President Uribe for alleged manipulation of witnesses.

Javier D. Suoto, District 10 commissioner, was the promoter of this initiative. And one of the arguments he used when presenting the proposal was the following: “Miami-Dade is the county with the highest number of Colombian-Americans in the States.” He also said that “Colombian-Americans are the second largest population” of Hispanics in the county.

Suoto, aware of the controversy that the decision has caused, said the following to Uribe’s purpose: “If you are not a good citizen, I do not think you can be so loved by your country and by your people outside of Colombia,” as quoted by New Herald.

For her part, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, from District 6, assured that sIf the former president is convicted, the resolution could be repealed, reviews the local newspaper Diario Las Américas.

Juan David Vélez, representative to the Chamber for Colombians abroad and member of the Democratic Center, celebrated the decision and thanked the county: “Thanks to Miami-Dade County for recognizing the Great Colombian.”

And the senator Maria del Rosario Guerra He said he was happy about the news and said that it is “a special recognition of the work, love and commitment to Colombia and democracy that President @AlvaroUribeVel has had.”
