María requested that her pet be brought into the cabin with her, but the airline insisted that due to flight policies the animal it had to go in a crate in the cellar.

On January 13, the holidays ended for María Fernanda and her faithful companion, Homero, after a trip of almost a month in Putumayo. She thought it better to return by plane so as not to subject her pet to another 36 hours by bus – as she had done to get to Mocoa last December.

“That time we traveled 36 hours by bus, he was next to me all the way from Armenia -which is where I live- to Mocoa where we went on vacation. The puppy was healthy, he did not have any disease “, says María Fernanda.

Although they did not allow her to take Homer in the cabin, she agreed to let him go to the cellar in a crate, but when they arrived in Cali and went to look for her pet, she learned the tragic news.

“Immediately I got off the plane I ran to the warehouse to see my pet because I never let go of him and when I arrive and I see that it is under all the suitcases and full of blood because apparently he tried to get out of the crate and also hurt himself, “he says.

He added: “They told me wait and when they gave it to me I was with a green cloth on it and dead. Without saying a single word they left. I took out my cell phone and recorded, I don’t know how I did because I was crying.”

Maria grabbed Homer’s body and together with her husband -who was waiting for her at the Cali- they took him in the car to a vet in Armenia so they could have a certificate of the cause of death.

“We left it in Huellitas where They frozen him and the next day they cremated him. The whole procedure was done to check the cause of death and it was due to Hypoxia (asphyxia) I have the medical certificate. The plane reached such a high point that it caused the asphyxia of the animal and in the space in which it was, it was not adequate for a living being to travel “, says María Fernanda.

The ashes of the two-and-a-half-year-old pet rest in the house of María Fernanda and her husband.

For its part, the airline Esasyfly issued a statement explaining what happened.

“Respecting and caring for animals is a priority for Easyfly. In Homer’s case, the documentation required for his transport in the cabin, which includes a medical certificate of emotional support and vaccination card, was not presented, due to the which the company offered the passenger, Homero’s owner, the option of transporting him in the hold of the plane in a crate, as appropriate in these cases, in accordance with current regulations. In this sense, and with prior authorization from the owner, this was transported “, they indicated.

And they added that “as transporters we do not know the health conditions with which the animals board the aircraft, as well as the special physical, emotional, temperature or pressure conditions that the animal can withstand during the trip, so its owners are the right people to determine whether, after compliance with aeronautical regulations, the animals can travel or not “.
