The conference will take place this Wednesday, November 25. There is still no certainty of how big the mobilization will be, as some promoters insist on making the tours with their taxis and others assure that it will be a massive march without vehicles.

Taxi drivers and owners will join the week of mobilizations that Bogotá has been experiencing. Although their reasons for taking to the streets are different from those of the National Strike Committee, a part of the yellow union decided to take advantage of this protest to make their voice heard and give visibility to the claims they have made for several years, especially those related to with the regulation of transport platforms.

Grass: Taxis want dynamic rate at peak and valley hours

The strike will start at five sites in the capital (Estadio de Techo, Calle 106 with Carrera 15, Calle 63 with Carrera 60, Zona Franca and Almacén Tuyo Engativá). There will also be another starting place in Soacha and municipalities surrounding Bogotá.

However, there is no certainty of how big the mobilization will be, as some promoters insist on making the tours with their taxis and others assure that it will be a massive march without vehicles.

In fact, the strike will be a great measure of how much reception the unionists and leaders have that in other times, with a couple of calls, managed to block the entire city. Today that no longer happens. Or at least it was the conclusion after the last great mobilization of the union, which took place on July 10, 2019 in Bogotá and other capitals.

That day, instead of greatly affecting mobility, the most striking were the violent acts of some drivers against colleagues who refused to support the strike. Since then, due to the obvious setback, the union has not proposed a mobilization like the one they hope to carry out today.

The reasons are already known and have been debated in multiple settings. The taxi drivers that will leave are looking for real actions to “combat illegality”, that is, the transport apps.

Elías Forero, spokesman for SiTaxiBog, one of the unions that promote mobilization, summarized the reasons for the economic blow that the union has been having for eight years. “At this time, many owners generate the same day they generated in 2012. The reason? That year the illegal platforms began to arrive and now the priority of the union is to say no to the bills that are being processed to legalize the provision of individual transport services in private vehicles ”.

The nonconformity is clear. The promoters say that they do not intend to allow the processing of projects to regulate apps to advance.

“They are confusing the provision of the service with technology,” said Édison Perilla, president of the Taxiplus Bogotá union, who assures that, in addition to that, there is disagreement with the Mobility or Transit secretariats of several cities. “They are not enforcing the rules or attacking illegality. All the sanctions are against our union and in Bogotá we believe that there is a dispute against us, because we will not let them put the tablets.

The strike will be a test of how strong the unions, owners and taxi drivers are at this time, since at least the companies, while supporting the reasons for the mobilization, have decided to distance themselves and continue in permanent dialogue with the authorities district and national transportation.

Taxis Libres, the largest company of the union in the capital, said yesterday through its manager, Stefanía Hernández, that “the importance of legal competition is understood, framed in a balanced supply and demand”, but in turn made a Call on the authorities to regulate “under the same conditions” all companies that provide individual public transport service.

In addition to taxi drivers, bike taxi drivers from areas such as Patio Bonito and Portal Norte will also take to the streets today, and will march towards the Ministry of Transportation to request speed in the regulation of their service in the city.
