One of the few pending that Sony had regarding the Playstation 5 it was to show its interior. And it is that the community of players, mainly those who made the reservation, wanted answers about the cooling system. Today we were finally given a look at the internals, including the process for expanding the internal storage with PCIe 4.0 drives. However, another novelty of demolish has to do with the side covers of the console.

After much speculation about it, they finally confirmed that you can remove the lids without too many complications. Beyond being the only way to add a second SSD storage unit, Sony’s proposal could open the door to customization of the PlayStation 5. The company did not want to delve into whether it will offer covers with different designs and colors, but it is a matter of time before it happens.

Even if Sony does not intend to sell covers separately, surely several manufacturers are rubbing their hands after the video released today. Now, the company is unlikely to give up a customization market that could prove very profitable. For starters, how many people would like to have the PlayStation 5 totally black? To many, surely. The company has here another business opportunity in the next generation.

Perhaps at this time they are not commenting on it because its main objective is to produce, distribute and sell as many consoles as possible. Let us also not forget that the entire technology industry was affected by its production due to the coronavirus pandemic, including Sony. Therefore, making caps should not be among your initial priorities. Once the picture improves, feel free to reveal more details about customization.

The end of the special editions?

Sony had already hinted that users could customize the PlayStation 5, although they never specified how. Matt MacLaurin, vice president of user experience design at Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed last July that the PS5 could be customized “in ways that previous consoles couldn’t”. Most of us intuit, however, that he was referring to the console interface, which we still do not know about – as of this writing.

Won’t custom covers interfere with your special edition console business? They could make an impact, certainly, but the tapas market could be more profitable for them. After all, your potential market will be the millions of people who already have the console at home; not a small niche of enthusiasts with the purchasing power to buy a limited version of the hardware. Let’s be patient and wait for an official pronouncement from Sony.
