Shocking injuries in soccer: Santiago Arias, David Busst, Patrick Battiston and others – International Soccer – Sports

Soccer is a contact sport, so, on the court, crashes and trips are very common. And there are some that stand out for their severity and visual impact.

One of the latest examples of this is that of the Colombian defender Santiago Arias, who suffered a severe injury on the first date of the Qatar 2022 qualifying rounds, in which Colombia beat Venezuela 3-0.

Santiago Arias

There were barely eight minutes of the match between the Colombian and Venezuelan teams, in the qualifying rounds for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Arias disputed a ball with the Venezuelan Darwin Machís near the Colombian area. When he tried to cut off his opponent’s play, he got tangled in the grass and was lying on the ground. Immediately, He was treated by paramedics, but things were not looking good for his left ankle.

As confirmed, the winger suffered complex ligament injuries to his left ankle and a fibula fracture. The side is expected to be operated in the next few days. You will be on leave for at least six months.

André Gomes

It happened on November 3, 2019, on the eleventh date of the 2019-20 Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur faced Everton.

In the 80th minute of the game, Heung-MIng Son, Tottenham forward, disputed a ball with André Gomes, of the rival team.

At that moment, Son came in abruptly knocking Gomes down, who was left on the ground with his foot deformed. As it became known later, he had broken his right ankle. The recovery of the Portuguese player lasted three and a half months, since at the end of February he was back on the court.

David busst

Unlike the previous case, Busst was cut off from football after suffering an exposed fracture in the tibia and fibula of his right leg.

The injury took place in a Premier League match between Manchester United and Coventry in April 1996. According to the sports newspaper ‘Marca’, the injury was so explicit that many of those who saw it needed psychological attention.

This was the defender’s last game with his team, Coventry, as he required up to 26 operations after the injury, which is considered one of the worst seen in the entire history of English football.

Djibril cisse

This retired French player broke both legs in less than two years. The first time in 2004, when he was a Liverpool player and broke the tibia in his left leg in a Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers.

Six months later he had recovered and was able to kick the ball again. However, in 2006 he was injured again, this time in a friendly match between France and China.

It happened 10 minutes into the game, when Cissé broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg, fractures from which he also ended up recovering. He retired in 2017.

Patrick Battiston

Due to a ‘flying kick’ from goalkeeper Harald Schumacher, this Frenchman was left with a broken jaw, an injured vertebra and no four teeth.

The shocking event occurred before the eyes of millions, as it was the semifinal of the 1982 World Cup in Spain, in which Germany faced France (July 1982).

Although at first glance, the consequences of the crash were not as explicit as those of other cases on this list, if they left Battiston convalescing for just over six months.

Christian cruz

This player from the Liga de Quito team broke the tibia, fibula and ankle of his left leg.

The injury happened in August 2019, in a Copa Libertadores match against Boca Juniors.

In the 31st minute, Cruz threw himself to the ground to save a shot from Argentine Carlos Tevez. Without having contact with the latter, The Ecuadorian’s foot dug into the grass and was bent backwards.

The image was so shocking that several players ran to find the stretcher with which he was taken from the place.

Cruz’s recovery took a little over six months.

Ewald Lienen

Lienen’s injury stands out for its rarity. This retired footballer was an attacking midfielder who, on August 14, 1981, suffered one of the bloodiest wounds in soccer history.

That day, his team, Arminia Bielefeld faced Werder Bremen in Germany.

At 20 minutes into the game, Lienen received a ball from the left wing that he could not control, which led the opposing defender, Norbert Siegman, to take advantage of the attack. In doing so, its aluminum wires impacted Lienen’s right thigh and made a 25-centimeter ‘butcher’s’ cut that exposed the muscles of the affected.

With all this, Lienen was able to stand up and, irate, went to claim Otto Rehhagel, the Werder Bremen coach.

Lienen received 23 stitches and was out for 17 days. Currently, he serves as technical director.

Caleb cardozo

In May 2019, a Bolivian League match was being played between the Aurora and Always Ready teams.

In the 58th minute, Aurora defender Caleb Cardozo tried to steal the ball from Cristhian Arabe. The action caused the defender’s right leg to get stuck, resulting in a fibula fracture and a tear in its ligaments.

The Bolivian returned to the field at the end of that year. The shocking images of the injury, however, will remain for posterity.

Edgar Andrade

This footballer played for Cruz Azul, from Mexico, in 2007. That year, in May, his team faced Tecos, in a match corresponding to the local tournament.

Just in minute 6, Andrade swept trying to stop a play. Unfortunately, the foot that I used for support received all its weight and was fractured the ankle, fibula, tibia, and a torn ankle ligament, all on his right limb.

Andrade was out of the field for several months and, in 2008, he injured the cruciate ligament in his right knee.

According to specialized Mexican portals, this string of injuries affected the player’s career.

Eduardo da Silva

On February 23, 2008, Birmingham faced Arsenal, Da Silva’s team. That day, the ankle of this Brazilian nationalized Croatian was destroyed after the Englishman Martin Taylor slipped on the ground to take the ball from him.

The power of Taylor’s attack came from Da Silva’s right leg, who twisted in pain. The result was a fractured tibia and fibula that kept him off the court for almost a year.
