Senate will debate on police abuses this Tuesday

The difficult public order situation that has arisen in several cities in the country since last week due to protests following the abuse of citizens by police officers, which have caused more than 12 deaths, at least 450 injuries between civilians and police and the burning of more than 50 CAI will be the main topic of discussion this Tuesday in the Senate of the Republic.

The issue is of such importance that it will be discussed in two scenarios, in Commission II and in its plenary session. In the Commission, by summons from the president of the same, the conservative senator Juan Diego Gómez. In the first place, we seek to speak with the Director of the Police, the Director of Citizen Security, the Inspector General of the National Police, the Director of Human Talent and the Director of the Metropolitan Police of Bogotá.

Although this issue will not be discussed publicly, if an accidental commission with liberal senators, Radical Change, Conservative Party, Democratic Center and the Green Alliance was integrated.

The summons is at 9:30, when the police violence and the excessive use of the Public Force that has occurred during the last week will be analyzed. The Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, will also be present at the meeting.

Plenary debate

In the plenary, which will be at three in the afternoon, the Minister of Defense is not formally summoned, but was invited, to present a report on the situation of public order. The plenary session was convened by the president of the corporation Arturo Char.

In this regard, the dignitary of the corporation stated that “in order to assess the public order situation, due to the death of Javier Ordóñez, I have assigned five senators from different parties to form an Accidental Commission to present a report to the plenary session of the Senate next Tuesday, September 15 ”.

The designated senators Luis Fernando Velasco Cháves, of the Liberal party; Ernesto Macías Tovar, Democratic Center; Efraín Cepeda Saravia, Conservative Party; Juan Luis Castro Córdoba, Green Alliance and Jorge Luis Pérez Oyuela, Radical Change. They are preparing a report on the difficult public order situation that is taking place.

In this regard, the liberal senator, Luis Fernando Velasco, said “that a part of the country is in the Executive Branch, which won the elections, all the country’s political forces are in the Senate and today we must make an effort to help stop the violence and control police brutality”.

For his part, the senator of the Green Alliance, Juan Luis Castro, will deliver in that subcommission a series of videos that he has received from the communities that have shared the abuses that the Police have done since last Wednesday, especially in the capital of the country.

Uribista senator Ernesto Macías insisted on saying that the Police is made up of more than 161,000 women and men, humble, with dreams and families, and that is what should be clear at the time of the debate. “They are people who dedicate themselves for the welfare and safety of Colombians. I repudiate the accusations and irresponsible and infamous stigmatization for political purposes, ”he said.

The debate will first have the intervention of the five senators who were in charge of obtaining information on the public order situation, then the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, will intervene and then the senators of the different political parties will intervene.

This week, a public hearing will also be given to the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, which will take place next Thursday, September 17 in a virtual way, on police violence and excessive use of force by the authorities.
