A whole controversy has unleashed a millionaire contract that the San Andrés government signed for the installation of Christmas lighting on the island.
While this may be an impetus for economic reactivation, some sectors have not seen favorably that 1,550 million pesos are invested for this purpose, taking into account that less than a month ago Hurricane Iota passed through the archipelago, which has been classified as the worst tragedy in the history of the island.
In the memorandum format in which the resources are requested, the General Secretary (e) of this Caribbean municipality, Martha Patricia Moreno Rojas, requests authorization from the governor (e), Alen Leonardo Jay Stephens, to advance the contract, which already It was celebrated, The official affirms that the Covid-19 pandemic and the passage of Hurricane Iota, as well as the blow of Eta, has generated an economic and tourist slowdown in the islands.

For 1,550 million pesos, the Government of San Andrés signed the contract for the Christmas lighting.
For these reasons, it considers that the purpose of the lighting is “the economic reactivation and tourism, the integration of the population of the islands, competitiveness and regional recognition, as a pole of tourism development”says the document.
However, this has not been viewed favorably. One of the harshest critics has been the representative to the Chamber for Radical Change César Lorduy, who described it as “absurd” to allocate this millionaire figure for lighting when there are people in need.

In the memorandum, Moreno Rojas asks the governor (e) for his approval to contract the provision of the leasing, transportation, installation, operation, assembly and disassembly service of the Christmas lighting through an inter-administrative contract with the Public Services Company of Sabaneta.

After the passage of Hurricane Iota on November 15 and 16, Providencia was devastated. According to official figures, 98 percent of the infrastructure was affected.
