Former President Ernesto Samper Pizano and former Minister Horacio Serpa assured, after the revelation made by the Farc, that “they are surprised by the news”, although they hope that it will serve to “build a new narrative of peace and reconciliation.” Álvaro Gómez was assassinated by gunmen on November 2, 1995 in Bogotá when he was leaving the Sergio Arboleda University, where he was a visiting professor, during the Samper administration.

Precisely, during these years, Gómez was a staunch critic of both Samper and Serpa, involved in a monumental scandal over the income of money from the Cali cartel to the presidential campaign known judicially as the 8,000 process.

Now, Samper and Serpa vindicate their innocence and henceforth show their trust in “the transitional justice system, led by Judge Patricia Linares of the JEP and Father Francisco de Roux, in the Truth Commission”, as certified in your release.
“We are surprised with the news published today by the Chamber of Recognition of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace, JEP, according to which members of the former FARC secretariat assume responsibility for a regrettable series of homicides, including that of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado ”, they said.
“Although we understand and support that this recognition is made within the framework of transitional justice, as a contribution to the truth, we hope to know the details of the way, time and place that the JEP will surely investigate to make a definitive pronouncement on them”, they added.

“In recent years, we have been victims of insults and slander from Álvaro Gómez’s family, motivated by petty financial interests,” they reveal.
“Likewise, according to this revelation, we have also been victims of the silence of the Farc regarding its responsibility in this homicide. Such a circumstance does not prevent us, however, understand the importance that this recognition can have ”, they say.
