Reward for assassins of Javier Parra, defender Caño Cristales

Parra Cubillos, 47, worked as regional coordinator of the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of La Macarena (Cormacarena), and was shot by motorcycle hitmen when he arrived at the offices of that entity, in Meta.

The murder of this environmentalist was confirmed by Ombudsman’s Office, on Twitter, and said that Javier Francisco Parra Cubillos he was “protector of Caño Cristales from his position as coordinator of Cormacarena’s actions.

In turn, the attorney general, Fernando Carrillo, said that defending the environment and the wealth of forests and jungles “has made our environmental leaders a target for criminal mafias.”

The governor of Meta, Juan Guillermo Zuluaga, joined the rejection of this crime and asked to protect defenders of nature from “the criminals who are devastating our environment.”

In response to these calls for authorities to capture those responsible, the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, offered a press conference where he announced that he would increase the reward up to 300 million pesos for information that allows to find the murderers.

“This is a murder that hurts us, that hurts the region and Colombia, and that puts an end to the life of a man dedicated to tasks in defense of the environment,” Trujillo said.

The minister recounted the trajectory of Parra Cubillos and all the contributions he made in defense of biodiversity, and assured that he read the resume because “a man on this earth was killed, and he prepared to dedicate his life to serving the environment.”

“They killed a real leader,” Trujillo added at a press conference.
