In the first final in history between Basque teams, he won thanks to a penalty goal from Mikel Oyarzabal. He had not achieved a title since 1987.

Real Sociedad was proclaimed champion of the Copa del Rey 2020 this Saturday, beating Athletic Bilbao 1-0 in the final, thirty-four years after lifting the trophy in 1987. The first for the San Sebastian team had been in 1909.

A penalty goal by Mikel Oyarzabal (63) gave Real its second Copa del Rey in the first Basque final in the history of this century-old competition, which was postponed last season due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The match had been postponed in the hope that it could be played with an audience, although it finally had to take place in a stadium in La Cartuja, in Seville, where only a handful of official guests were present.

Athletic, winner of the Spanish Super Cup last January, jumped onto the field ready to push the ball out of Real Sociedad. The two teams, knowing what was at stake, were very cautious at the beginning, until the goal in the second half revolutionized the match.

In the first half, Real Sociedad hardly disturbed the goal defended by Unai Simón, while Athletic, more vertical, was about to surprise Álex Remiro, who cleared a hard shot from Íñigo Martínez (32) for a corner.

After half-time, the game kept the same pattern until Íñigo Martínez knocked down Portu in the area, in an action sanctioned with a penalty. Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal converted the penalty to make it 1-0 on the scoreboard.

With the score against, Athletic turned to attack in search of a tie, but found a Real Sociedad that retracted lines and was very solid in defense to end up taking the match and the trophy.

It is the third time that Real Sociedad has won the cup trophy, after the titles won in 1987 and 1909. It has also won two leagues (1980-81 and 1981-82), in addition to the 1982 Spanish Super Cup.
