After a year waiting because of the covid-19 pandemic, this Saturday the grand final of the Copa del Rey could finally be played in its 2019-20 edition. Athletic Club and Real Sociedad staged a real match, worthy of the so-called ‘Basque Derby’.
The start of the game was clouded by a torrential downpour that at times slowed down the vertigo and speed intentions that both teams had on the pitch.
After 25 minutes, none of the finalists had been able to make a direct shot to the goal. There were several approaches from the sides, but everything ended without any problem in the hands of Unai Simón or Álex Remiro.
The first clear arrival came half an hour into the game, when Iñigo Martínez, ex-Real Sociedad, released a powerful shot from 30 meters that Remiro took with the tips of his fingers. Little by little the rain diminished.
Like all classic, the game began to be cut by continuous infractions, rubbing, yellow … The central referee had a lot of work because each decision was protested by one or the other.
The second part began with a great controversy, since the VAR analyzed a possible maximum penalty in favor of Real Sociedad by hand in the area. After several minutes, the decision was not to penalize.
At minute 58 the game would completely change. Portu ran into the void after a sensational pass from Isak, entering the area Iñigo destabilized him and ended up knocking him down with his arm. The referee immediately sanctioned maximum penalty and expelled the offender.
After reviewing the play in the VAR, the decision was to keep the penalty, but cancel the red for Iñigo. One for another. All of the above mattered little to Mikel Oyarzabal, who nailed her at the angle. Advantage for the Royal.
Obviously the Bilbaoans put aside their defensive back and advanced lines. With need on the surface they had to go for all or nothing. For its part, Anoeta’s team did not go back but tried to process possession and close spaces when necessary.
After an eight-minute replacement, Real Sociedad ended up becoming champion of the Copa del Rey by the slightest difference in the Basque Country classic. Annotation by captain Mikel Oyarzabal.
