Rains leave victims in Magdalena and Cartagena

The Office for Disaster Risk Management of Magdalena (Ogerd) reported that the sudden rises of the tributaries that descend from the Sierra Nevada affected some 8,000 people in the populations of El Retén, Aracataca, Banana Zone, Fundación and Algarrobo.

“In Fundación the affected people would be 3,500, while, in El Retén, Aracataca Algarrobo and Zona Bananera the victims are estimated at 4,500”, said the director of the Ogerd, Jaime Avendaño.

In each of these municipalities the relief agencies carry out evacuations of affected families while the Magdalena government manages the actions to try to contain the overflows of the Fundación and Sevilla rivers.

In the northern subregion of that department, work is being done to register victims in the areas affected by the emergency, the Magdalena Government said on Twitter.

Rains caused by hurricane Eta cause floods in Cartagena

The mayor of ‘La heroica’ indicated that this Monday the strong rains, that were accompanied by thunderstorms, They flooded 120 homes in 16 neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city.

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) said this Monday in a statement that “The major category 4 hurricane Eta will continue to strengthen in the western Caribbean Sea until it makes landfall.” Likewise, the entity published a graph on Twitter that illustrates Eta’s activity off the coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras.

Before making landfall in Nicaragua, the cyclone could intensify to category 5 and flogging that country, as well as Honduras, for at least 4 days, CNN said.

San Andrés, on alert for hurricane Eta
