In bad taste: such were the statements of the historic Graeme Souness, former footballer and now a commentator on ‘Sky Sports’, to criticize the Argentine Erik Lamela, in the match in which Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Manchester United. The play that ended in the expulsion of Anthony Martial for United, sparked strong comment from the Scotsman.
It was a play in which both players attacked each other, but only the Frenchman was sent off. The Argentine had hit Martial, the United player answered him and the spurs’ midfielder fell to the ground with gestures of pain; the judge bought and punished only one. That maneuver generated criticism from Souness and the racist comment against the Latin soccer player.
“Has fallen. It’s pathetic. Very Latin. If one is expelled, both have to go. It’s pathetic. So is the Premier going? We, and I mean the British players, do it differently ”, was the comment of the Scotsman, who played for Tottenham between 1971 and 1973.
The comment fell so badly in Tottenham, and the Latino community living in the UK, that another former Tottenham reacted on social media. Argentine Osvaldo Ardiles rejected Souness’ statements, spoke of stereotypes and even published a video in which a terrible aggression by the Scotsman in his days as a footballer is seen.
“I object to Graeme Souness’s ‘Latin’ comment about Erik Lamela. Stereotyping all Latino soccer players in this way is grossly unfair. It would be the same as saying that this so-called tackle represents the ‘British’ style. Which is clearly not, ”Ardiles published, outraged by the situation.

At the end of the broadcast of the match between United and Tottenham, the ‘Sky Sports’ host apologized for Souness’s false start: “At the beginning of the program we were critical of Erik Lamela for his role in Martial’s expulsion. We would like to apologize for any offense caused by the stereotyping of Latino culture. “
