Prosecutor’s Office opens investigation for deaths in La Modelo prison in Bogotá – Investigation – Justice

Due to the alleged irregularities that could lead to the violent events of March 21 in the La Modelo prison in Bogotá, in which 24 inmates died and more than 80 injured amid protests, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation opened a formal investigation.

An act of March 18 also warned that there was “a probability of alterations to the internal order by those deprived of liberty due to the preventive measures adopted in the face of the emergency generated by covid-19 (…)it is necessary to meet the security council and design a contingency plan with a view to attending, reducing and mitigating any outbreak of disciplinary actions “.

According to a report delivered by Inpec, on March 21, 2020, 55 injured persons deprived of liberty required external hospital care and 28 inmates were treated in the health area, 2 seriously injured custodial assistants were hospitalized and 5 officials from the injured guard. In addition, 24 deprived of liberty died.All the deceased, except one, died from a firearm projectile, according to the autopsies of Legal Medicine.
