Due to the alleged irregularities that could lead to the violent events of March 21 in the La Modelo prison in Bogotá, in which 24 inmates died and more than 80 injured amid protests, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation opened a formal investigation.

An act of March 18 also warned that there was “a probability of alterations to the internal order by those deprived of liberty due to the preventive measures adopted in the face of the emergency generated by covid-19 (…)it is necessary to meet the security council and design a contingency plan with a view to attending, reducing and mitigating any outbreak of disciplinary actions “.
According to a report delivered by Inpec, on March 21, 2020, 55 injured persons deprived of liberty required external hospital care and 28 inmates were treated in the health area, 2 seriously injured custodial assistants were hospitalized and 5 officials from the injured guard. In addition, 24 deprived of liberty died.All the deceased, except one, died from a firearm projectile, according to the autopsies of Legal Medicine.

In addition to opening the investigation against the three linked, the control body ordered a visit to La Modelo to obtain information on the security command panel that weekend, to determine who was the commander of custody and regular surveillance for the date of the facts, what actions did the prison director take with the territorial entities and other authorities in the face of the covid-19 situation.
It also seeks to establish, among other things, what actions the management took based on the covid-19 measures and what measures regarding the alleged rumors that circulated on social networks regarding an alleged pan and escape plan that the companies were going to carry out. people deprived of liberty, among others due to the spread of covid-19, and which led to the events of March 21, 2020.
Equally, It will be sought to determine if the prisoners on March 21, 2020 arrived at the armerillo and seized weapons, and several inmates who were injured that day will be heard at random in a statement, as well as the guards of the special operative groups that participated in the events of March 21, 2020.
