The Attorney General’s Office summoned Piedad Córdoba to testify, after the former senator assured that she had valuable information about the murder of Colombian political leader Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, which occurred in 1995 in the country’s capital. For these statements, Córdoba was strongly criticized by the Gómez Hurtado family and public opinion.
The former senator’s statements were made on September 9, in the program El debate en Vivo, in Semana magazine. There, the former presidential candidate said that she did know something about the assassination of Gómez Hurtado and that, to “support” her statements, she would send all the evidence she had to the Truth Commission.
Relatives of the former conservative politician launched strong criticism of Córdoba. Among them, Mauricio Gómez, son of Gómez Hurtado, who said that Córdoba “He was playing his parliamentary face in Congress and in hiding he was the Farc’s record.” In addition, she assures that she “was saved” because they declared the computer’s chain of custody illegal, “but she was that link of the Farc.”
Córdoba said that, although he does not share the ideology of the murdered politician, he was a very influential personality in the country and wants to contribute so that Colombians know the truth about the case.
“What I know about the murder of Álvaro Gómez Hurtado I will not turn it into a show business or media issue, I will say it in the Truth Commission because I think the country needs to know, because I go back and repeat, here leaders are assassinated and it seems that it does not affect society, and it does affect, such as massacres for example “Córdoba explained in El Debate de Semana.
Faced with the accusations made against the former presidential candidate Córdoba, Senator Gustavo Petro came out in her defense and said “I think that Piedad Córdoba was used by the Farc, that out of her love to advance the possibility of peace with the Farc, she risked her entire political career and was persecuted by arbitrarily removing her seat.”
The former senator also clarified that when she says that she has information about the assassination of Gómez Hurtado, she does not seek to harm Uribismo and made it clear that she does not belong to or share the ideologies of that political movement.
“I do not have ideological or personal closeness, nor do I know if it suits Uribismo that it was so-and-so or it was Zutano. I believe that what is convenient for the country is the truth, it is necessary for the country to know the truth and for the country to be clear about who the actors really were, and not that directed investigations lead to not being known, or paying for the broken dishes as in the case of Galán’s murderer, a person who was in jail and had nothing to do with it and then his name could not even be cleared for he died. I am very convinced that this is sepa, ”exhorted former Congresswoman Piedad.
A few weeks ago, another of the events that also ‘shook’ social networks was the meeting that was held at the home of former Minister Juan Fernando Cristo, which was attended by former President Juan Manuel Santos; the head of the Farc party, Rodrigo Londoño; and Senator Iván Cepeda. Faced with that encounter, Córdoba tweeted some quite controversial messages on his Twitter account in which he exhorted individuals to find the truth about the assassination of Gómez Hurtado.
“Mr. Nobel Prize Juan Manuel Santos, former minister (Juan Fernando) Cristo, senator (Iván) Cepeda, gentlemen (Rodrigo Londoño) Timochenko and Carlos Lozada, since they are meeting to advance the truth, it would be very good if you could find it on the murder of Dr. Álvaro Gómez Hurtado ”, wrote the former senator at that time.
And it went further. He said that because of that case, there were many military personnel who were “Paying for the broken dishes”: “And that right there they tell the truth to former president Samper. It is very important to know the truth because for the murder of Dr. Álvaro Gómez Hurtado there are soldiers paying for the broken dishes, ”Córdoba added.
The senator also recently referred to the audios published by El Espectador about the Santrich case in which she was allegedly involved. Faced with these accusations, in an interview with Caracol Radio, former senator Córdoba said that she had already heard these audios in which she allegedly participates and assures that they are only a poorly done assembly. “I listened to the recording and that is not my voice. It is a crude and poorly made montage, ”the former senator emphasized about these audios.
