The congressman assured that, although an injury of 31 millimeters in the esophageal tissue was evident, after undergoing a procedure in Cuba “there would be no cancer cells.”
On April 10, Petro shared a video on Twitter in which he announced that on March 2, in Cuba, he had been diagnosed with “cancer early in the junction of the esophagus with the stomach.” He also said that later more tests were done in Colombia and that “the existence of an injury was determined in the same place.”
Through a video released on Wednesday night, the senator Gustavo Petro –That last week he underwent a surgical intervention to remove a tissue that apparently gave evidence of esophageal cancer – revealed that, after the procedure performed in Cuba, it was found that would have no cancer cells.

Thanking the “Expectation, attention and solidarity” that he has received “at a time that has been difficult”, the congressman gave an account of his medical history and detailed the procedure he underwent at the Center for Surgical Medical Research (CIMEQ) of the island.
“I was diagnosed by the CIMEQ of squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus (Cancer), with total endoscopic resection (procedure to remove suspicious tissue). Had a history of gastroesophageal reflux and in February this diagnosis was made. Endoscopic examination revealed a 31 mm injury that reached the mucosa and submucosa of the esophageal tissue without reaching the muscular layer, “revealed the senator.

According to Petro, after examinations at two institutions in Colombia, it was confirmed the injury without any malignant samples having been found. “In a new intervention at the CIMEQ, which I just performed, an exeresis (removal) of the lesion was performed by endoscopy. The result of this intervention is evident endoscopic improvement in relation to the first observation. and resolution of esophageal erosion. Exresis of the mucosa was performed with a biopsy. For today, there would be no cancer cells ”he added.
The senator from Colombia Humana pointed out that, on medical recommendation, must undergo endoscopy in three months. “I publish the summary of my medical history, thank you,” he said.
Petro was subjected to a mucosal scan endoscopy at the gastroesophageal junction, accompanied by Juan Manuel Corzo, Colombian ambassador to Cuba.
Corzo’s presence in the surgery was at the request of the same senator to accompany him and give a part of reassurance about his illness which has raised suspicions in public opinion, because the examinations made in Colombia did not determine whether or not the findings of the esophageal tissue were cancerous.
From the Foreign Ministry, the ambassador was asked to support Petro during his stay in Cuba. “The Minister (Claudia Blum) has also requested the Embassy of Colombia in Cuba to give the senator all the support that you require during your stay in that country ”.
