In recent days, a solidarity campaign has been carried out with the Cundinamarca paperos, who in recent weeks have complained of how much their income has decreased since the importation of potatoes from Europe has increased.

Authorities from the department, from Bogotá and various opinion leaders have invited drivers to mobilize on the roads and help them by buying bundles of potatoes at the different tolls where they are. For the moment, The campaign has been successful and several of the farmers have seen income that does not match their usual sales.

According to the governor of Cundinamarca, Nicolás García, intermediaries buy the packages from the paperos at 15,000 pesos, to resell them in the cities at 70,000 pesos. So, the campaign these days proposed to sell the packages at 40,000 pesos, so that the farmers receive a fairer sum of money for the quality product they offer.

The success in sales was confirmed by Don José Quintero, a gardener who hit the road this Friday and managed to sell 70 packages. For that amount, the peasant would have received 1,300,000 pesos in the market, but after yesterday’s shift he returned home with 2,500,000 pesos.

The initiative to help the paperos will extend throughout this festive bridge. There are eight tolls in Cundinamarca where drivers will be able to find the stalls: Siberia Calle 80, Chusacá, Casa Blanca, Calle 13, Villapinzón, Los Andes, Boquerón and El Roble.
