The category 2 hurricane Iota, which is found in the Caribbean Sea, hits Santa Verónica, jurisdiction of Juan de Acosta, with strong waves.

According to the tour operators, the 70 meters that comprised the beach disappeared since this Saturday, when the incessant rains occurred, as a result of Iota’s passage through the Caribbean.

The height and strength of the waves reached the area of kiosks and restaurants that usually offer their services to tourists.

“We want to make it clear that we are not stealing space from the sea, the problem lies in erosion and the lack of sedimentation, here we no longer have sand,” said Ricardo Elías, a tour operator from Santa Verónica.

With stone sacks, the residents of Santa Verónica seek to combat the onslaught of the waves that sweeps with force and reaches up to 2 meters in height.

“We are very affected, and with sacks we will not be able to stop the force of the sea, if real measures are not taken, Santa Verónica will disappear”, emphasized Amanda Padilla, a resident of the area.

There are 23 tour operators asking for a prompt solution, arguing that in addition to the damage to infrastructure and the impact on their economy, they are also putting their integrity at risk.

“This is the chronicle of a fact that we have been announcing for years, but an emergency has to occur so that they can make decisions about the stability of this place,” added Ricardo Elías.

In support of those affected, the mayor of Juan de Acosta, Eduardo Higgins, visited the sector and requested support from the Caribbean Bank to obtain resources from the national government in order to carry out the infrastructure works that this resort needs to counteract coastal erosion.

“We already have the studies, we need around $ 40 billion to stabilize the Juan de Acosta coastline. What is happening is serious and needs urgent attention, “said the president.

Higgins is evaluating evicting the businesses should the situation continue.

Regarding the impact of erosion, the Regional Autonomous Corporation (CRA) considered that this is one of the most critical points in the department, for that reason they announced that they would carry out an operation to control artisanal mining developed on the Juan de Acosta stream, where the sand that must reach the beaches is being extracted.

While the Government, through the Undersecretary of Risk Management, Candelaria Hernández, referred to the support that Santa Verónica needs to avoid floods.
