No for violence against women: New case of femicide in Yarumal, Antioquia

This Sunday, September 29, a 21-year-old girl identified as Katerine Paniagua was murdered by her sentimental partner, in an attack that occurred in Yarumal, Antioquia.

This is the first case of femicide this year in Yarumal, a municipality in which homicides have occurred, mainly due to micro-trafficking.

“The death was caused by mechanical asphyxia, she was a young woman full of life and dreams, she was studying at the University of Antioquia. It is an unfortunate fact that has all the inhabitants of this municipality dismayed “, stated Miguel Ángel Peláez, mayor of Yarumal.

Katerine Paniagua was a pharmacy regency student at the University of Antioquia and is currently doing her professional internship.

In Antioquia, between January and October, 121 women have been murdered, 16 of these cases have been classified as femicide.

According to the mayor of the municipality, “She went to visit him at the house, between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm But at 4:20 in the afternoon, when the father of the companion arrives at the house, he realizes that he had murdered the companion and gave the report to the authorities ”.

Also, after ending the life of his partner, the defendant tried to commit suicide, for which he was referred to a health center, where he is receiving medical attention, but according to Peláez, he is in the custody of the Police.

On the other hand, the mayor also referred to “We recently celebrated the Week of Non-Violence against Women, we developed conferences to promote respect, tolerance, but this is still a sexist society where we find these unfortunate news”, said Mayor Peláez.

The victim’s body was transferred to the Forensic Medicine facilities to carry out the corresponding investigations.

Before what happened, Different groups of women and students called for a sit-in and a march in the main park of the municipality to reject femicide and demand justice.

Also, several people showed their outrage through social networks.

“Today we are going to take to the streets, we are going to be in the park all concentrated with a symbolic act raising our voices against this fact so that no more deaths of women continue to occur in Yarumal and anywhere in the world,” he said. Viviana María Hoyos, coordinator of the Yarumal Office of Equity and Gender.

“From the municipal administration and the Women’s Office we express our pain and indignation at this sad event, and we repudiate having to write this message to show solidarity with another woman victim of femicide. Today it was Katerine, tomorrow it can be any other woman in our municipality. The call is to be united and raise our voices against all kinds of violence that damages the integrity, the body and the lives of women.
