The Secretary of Mobility, Nicolás Estupiñán, confirmed that next year he will begin the process to replace traffic police with civilian agents. “We will have three years to dismantle the Traffic Police, which by order of the Government will pass to surveillance work.”
Regarding this, the mayor of Bogotá Claudia López said at a press conference that “We do not want to have ‘sucks’ again as they were told in the past, that was not a good story but the Ministry of Defense established a provision according to which the Traffic Police must end and there should only be surveillance police or those from other sectors. “
The president made a call to the Ministry of Defense because she says, it is to repeat a story that has already been lived. “We are happy to grow our road safety team, which is what we have here, but we would prefer that the Traffic Police continue to be the Traffic Police.”
He also explained that this change would be made only at the request of the Ministry of Defense but the desire of the District Administration is not to do so.
Nicolás Estupiñán, Secretary of Mobility, confirmed that, complying with the order, the city advances a pilot for the Traffic Police to be changed by civil agents, starting next year.
“We would have three years to carry out the clearing. By order of the Government these agents would go to surveillance,” he explained. By 2021 300 agents would enter and in 2022 another 350 men are expected to enter.
This surveillance body had already been part of the city until 1997, when Antanas Mockus, who was the mayor of Bogotá, decided to dismantle it due to allegations of corruption.
