News from San Andrés: Alert for arrival of storm Iota – Other Cities – Colombia

The Government of San Andrés y Providencia decreed this Saturday the curfew measure as part of the strategies designed to receive the onslaught of tropical storm Iota, that in the last hours has been consolidated with maximum winds of 30 knots (56 kilometers per hour).

According to the Decree, the movement of people is prohibited from 3 pm this Sunday until 5 am on Monday, November 16. In the same way, this Monday the measure will take effect from 3 pm until 5 a.m. m on Tuesday.

The Departmental Risk Management Council (Cdrg) announced the fitting out of two shelters south of San Andrés.

The Baptist Church Camp, in the Elsy Bar sector, and the Philip Beeckman school, sectors that are historically most affected by natural phenomena, were the places where the locations of these shelters were announced.

In addition, authorities confirmed that from this Saturday, and until further order, it is restricted the use of keys, beaches and the development of nautical activities for raizales, residents and tourists.

This tropical storm continues to cause rains and electrical storms in the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre and the insular area.

Due to its height, this climatic phenomenon will move to the west during the next few days, to the south of a high pressure system over the western Atlantic Ocean, and could reach the coast of Nicaragua this Sunday, affecting the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, as well as the Cayos Islands from the North, with heavy rains, strong winds, high waves and surface currents due to the storm surge, especially as of Saturday night.

The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), as the head of the National Meteorological Service, recommends taking extreme security measures in the development of maritime activities, especially vessels.

So far, no other measures have been defined, however, the closure of beaches and a general curfew that would run from this Sunday until Tuesday, November 17, 2020 is contemplated.

Preventive measures will be legitimized in a decree by the administration insular to safeguard the integrity of the resident and Raizal community in the archipelago.
