At about 10 in the morning on Monday, citizens of Manizales and Villamaría, in Caldas, said they had felt a tremor. Fact that was ratified by the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC)

According to the entity, the seismic event occurred at 09:42 in the morning and was of a magnitude 3.6, depth of 3 kilometers in the municipality of Casabianca (Tolima), Nevado del Ruiz volcano area of influence.
Hours later, the same Geological Survey indicated that this earthquake was the product of the movements that occurred inside the volcanic massif, which has been registering an “important” increase in volcano-tectonic seismic activity.

“This is associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic building, located in the northern sector, at an average distance of 0.7 km from the Arenas crater. This earthquake was reported as felt by officials of the Los Nevados National Natural Park and by inhabitants of Los Nevados. municipalities of Manizales and Villamaría ”, indicated the directives of the SGC.
It is important to note that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at the Yellow or III level of activity, the same level in which it has been since 2012 and which classifies it as active.
“It is not ruled out that there is activity that could indicate an acceleration of the process, implying greater instability of the volcano and consequently changes in its level of activity. Although the instability of the volcano has lasted for more than eight years, it is vitally important not to get used to its behavior and to be attentive to official information”They stated.

For his part, the director of the Caldas Risk Management Headquarters, Félix Ricardo Giraldo, pointed out that, although some phenomena such as ashfall or tremors are prevalent, the authorities are attentive to the behavior of the massif.
“We know that some of these behaviors are normal since 2012, but we call on the authorities and the community to be attentive to what happens and that we will inform the competent entities in a timely manner. In the same way, we give them a piece of peace of mind, because he is monitored 24 hours a day”Said the official.
In the case of Caldas, the areas of influence are the municipalities of Manizales, Villamaría, Chinchiná and Palestina, especially the municipalities or villages located near the water tributaries that flow directly from the volcanic building.
