The number of deceased could be higher. At least nine people die from drinking adulterated liquor.

At least nine people died from ingesting allegedly adulterated alcohol. The incident was registered in the community in the Mexican state of Morelos, state authorities reported on Tuesday.

Morelos government officials confirmed the death of nine men between the ages of 33 and 53, from ingesting adulterated alcohol.

The State Public Security Commission (CES) said that the number of deceased could be higher and asked the Morelos State Attorney General to initiate the corresponding investigation to clarify these events.

The presumption about a higher number of deaths is due to the fact that last night inhabitants of the region held an assembly in the public square and reported 13 dead relatives, after drinking “Amargo”, a type of mezcal that was sold during the festivities of the Mother’s day.

In the first investigations, the authorities located the establishment where it is presumed that the liquor that may have caused the death of the group of men was sold, who could have consumed it on Sunday, May 10 and Monday, May 11.

The CES Morelos urged the people of Telixtac who present discomfort from consuming allegedly adulterated alcohol, to go to the nearest health center to receive immediate medical attention.

Morelos records another history of deaths from drinking adulterated alcohol and refers to 1994 in the municipality of Temixco, where 48 people died, 21 were seriously poisoned and 10 became blind.
