New US visa program affects Colombians

The United States Government would harm thousands of Colombians, after were included in the group of citizens who will not be able to participate in the so-called “lottery of immigrant visas”.

The opening for the year 2022 of the “Diversity Visa Program” was announced by the Office of Consular Affairs of the Department of State, in which 55,000 permanent residence cards will be drawn, or green cards.

However, in the official document, President Trump included Colombia in the list of countries whose citizens will not be able to participate.

The text states that “people born in the following countries will not be eligible to apply, because more than fifty thousand natives of those countries immigrated to the United States in the last five years.

The list of nations includes Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti and Honduras.

Foreign citizens who already reside in the United States with non-immigrant status may aspire to permanent residence, as long as their nation of origin is not excluded.

Furthermore, it is required that applicants prove they have a high school degree or two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training.

It is worth remembering that in the last edition of the «visa lottery» almost seven million requests from all over the world.
