New images were released of the moment in which a Chilean police carabinero caused a young protester to fall from a bridge. The 22-year-old uniformed man was sheltered with preventive detention and will face charges for the crime of attempted homicide.

The victim suffered fractures to her wrists and damage to other parts of her body. Despite the above, it is stable.

The investigation

The Office for South America of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights asked this Monday to “investigate and, if appropriate, judge and punish” the fall of a minor on Friday after being pushed by a police officer at the end of a protest.

The UN office requested in a note an “exhaustive” investigation of the events that occurred on Friday at the Pío Nono bridge in Santiago de Chile after a new protest registered in Plaza Italia in the capital, the epicenter of the social demonstrations that broke out in October last year.

The minor fell to the almost dry bed of the Mapocho River from a height of more than seven meters after being pushed by a special forces agent, who was arrested and placed in preventive detention on charges of “attempted murder” after being determined. The justice considered that the agent used an excessive force that caused the fall of the minor.

After falling to the river bed, the minor did not receive help from the police, who later also tried to cover up the agent’s action.

“For the Office it is necessary to investigate and, if appropriate, judge and sanction not only the individual responsibility of the Carabineros official directly involved, but also investigate the possible responsibility of the commanders in charge of the operation, since the omission of assistance is particularly worrying by the Carabineros to the victim, who had to be helped by other protesters and civilian rescue workers, “says a press release.

According to the UN office, the case of the Pío Nono bridge “is not exceptional, but adds to the already extensive list of other cases of human rights violations by forces of order committed in the context of social demonstrations, which they have been documented in different reports at the international and national level “.

“The continuous and unconditional support for the forces of order and security is of concern, as they are repeated behaviors. I call for the patterns to be identified and the causes that favor these behaviors to be analyzed,” said the representative of UN Human Rights in South America , Jan Jarab.

The government of the conservative Sebastián Piñera condemned the incident but supported the actions of the Chilean police, which, according to them, have modified their protocols for controlling social protests since October last year.

However, the Minister of the Interior and Security, Víctor Pérez, avoided requesting the resignation of the general director of the Chilean Police, Mario Rozas.
