National Police will not carry weapons during the next demonstrations

The director of the National Police, General Óscar Atehortúa, confirmed that the uniformed officers of that institution they will not carry weapons during the demonstrations scheduled for next week in Bogotá and other cities in the country.

The officer asked the control agencies to accompany the Police, so that compliance with these protocols can be verified.

General Atehortúa recalled that according to international regulations, firearms must be used by the institution when it is for self-defense, defense of third parties, in the face of imminent danger of death, when conditions exceed the human capacities of these servants public

It is worth mentioning that in recent days there were violent excesses against Police stations and CAI, in rejection of the death of Javier Ordoñez, in an apparent case of police abuse by two uniformed men in the town of Engativá.

He also emphasized that crowds should not exceed 50 people.

No uniformed person who accompanies this public demonstration or marches of these small groups, will use elements or firearms, but only the equipment to preserve the safety of the attendees“, he indicated at a press conference.

He added that the activation of mechanisms established by the institution has been requested “so that they are received as soon as any claim or request from the National Police is known and acted forcefully.”

He also assured that “at this time there are public threats; we know that there are people with an interest called urban commandos or urban and neighborhood groups who intend to carry out violent activities, the resounding message to them is: the National Police will combat any criminal action that is presented and will discourage these actions. ”

He said that based on the information received they have opened 77 disciplinary investigations, 67 of these are in the city of Bogotá. He specified that these 77 investigations involve 101 policemen who the majority are in the capital of the republic.

“Within these investigations it is typified that 14 of these uniformed men had used firearms “, he pointed out.

And he stressed that as a determination of the institution 10 police officers have been suspended so far. “One of them in an unfortunate image is a policeman who had used a jacket backwards and had a forceful element attacking a person.”

The measures implemented came after a meeting of generals from around the country which was held in the city of Bogotá.
