Atlético Nacional drew 1-1 with River Plate from Uruguay, in the first leg for the second phase of the 2020 South American Cup. The Purslanes started winning with a goal from Vladimir Hernández, while Horacio Salaverry equalized the score. The purslanes showed a better face, but the expulsion of Yerson Mosquera, mortgaged their ambition to play and allowed those led by Jorge Fossati to grow in the game.
The first half was a battle between two combative teams, who came out to propose. River Plate appeared at minute 7 with a shot deflected by Nicolás Rodríguez with his right foot after a free kick from the right sector. The visit pressed very high and did not let Nacional go out with solvency, which did not have the necessary spaces to seek his offensive game. The game had a lot of friction in the center of the field, with direct play. Nacional managed to get rid of that pressure with accurate touches and quick transitions.
At minute 34, a corner kick in favor of River Plate led to a counterattack that Atlético Nacional took advantage of in a great way, where several players intervened, with Jefferson Duque as the central axis of the play, he handed it to Yerson Candelo who from the Right sector filtered the pass to the heart of the area so that Vladimir Hernández simply pushed it to the back of the net. A goal that gave the locals more confidence, which had to extend the score, a few minutes later through Bryan Rovira, but the midfielder failed to define one-on-one with goalkeeper Gastón Olveira.
At the end of the initial stage, spirits were heated when Maximiliano Calzada withdrew from the field after a physical discomfort prior to Nacional’s goal, in injury time, Yerson Mosquera was not calm and with a foul without the ball on Matías Arezo, the Venezuelan referee Ángel Arteaga did not hesitate to expel him. In the same play, Aldair Quintana and Fabián González Lasso were booked, ending up without a player and with four booked.
In the complementary stage, Nacional took out Jefferson Duque to join Jímer Fory, to rebuild the rear. For River, Guzmán Rodríguez withdrew to make way for Gonzalo Viera. At minute 7, the purslane had the second goal, after an incursion on the left by Andrés Andrade who crossed it to Vladimir Hernández, but the Araucanian spliced the ball with his right leg and it crashed horizontally.
On the 11th minute, Nacional made two more changes, removed Andrés Andrade, who was with a yellow card from minute 7 of the first half, to make way for Jarlan Barrera and relieved Yerson Candelo, who was returning from an injury, entering Déinner Quiñones.
At minute 24, a corner kick from the right side taken by Nicolás Rodríguez, the ball was served to Horacio Salaverry and the former Santa Fe spliced the ball with his right leg, far from the reach of goalkeeper Aldair Quintana. The Uruguayan team got the goal, thanks to the offensive work they had been doing in the second half.
After the goal, Nacional went looking for the second and almost got it at minute 26, with a shot from medium distance by Jarlan Barrera that passed very close to the Uruguayan goal. River took confidence and alternated attacks on the wing. The locals were slow in their transitions from defense to attack.
In the end, River Plate gets a draw that serves a lot for the goal scored as a visitor, which will force Nacional to go out to win the game in Montevideo, if it wants to advance to the next phase.
The return match will be at the Parque Alfredo Víctor Viera stadium, in Montevideo Uruguay, next Wednesday, November 4, from 5:15 in the afternoon Colombian time.
